In the wake of Hurricane Katrina there are, of course, almost unimaginable human needs. But there are also needs for animals affected by this disaster. Pets, strays, ferals and farm animals are also victims. Many pets are left behind since human shelters cannot take them. Did you know that one of the most common reasons people don't evacuate during disasters is becauase they have no place for their pets? And one of the greatest stresses on those people who evacuated or who are rescued is not knowing what happened to the pets they left behind?
If you want to help there are a few organizations taking donations. One with the most direct impact is the Humane Society of the United States. They work with the Red Cross in the affected areas with their disaster teams to assist animals. You can find out more and donate at: http://www.hsus.org
Another group providing services by collecting donations for aid is Best Friends. They are at: www.bestfriends.org
And there is the ASPCA, again collecting funds to channel to affected shelters in the area. You can donate or read about their efforts at: www.aspca.org

- Remember, old cell phone donations can help the shelter animals. Drop off your used wireless, cellular phones for recycling at $1 to $2 per phone, sometimes more depending on the phone's age and features. Sorry, cordless phones and car phones cannot be used.
