LCHS announces plans to build a new shelter

February 12th, 2008

We, the Board of Directors of our Lewis & Clark Humane Society”, are pleased and excited to announce to the greater Helena region that we are undertaking plans to build a modern, well-designed and aesthetically pleasing new animal shelter to serve our community and surrounding counties.  This new facility will be the culmination of years of planning and dreaming.  It will have ample space to support our current and future needs as well as new ,innovative and creative programs.  The design will allow us to provide more efficient service to you, our neighbors, and friends, as well as the neglected, abandoned and abused animals in the communities that rely on us.

Our Humane Society alone will undertake this project, which is the result of a painful but necessary decision we were forced to make in March of 2007 regarding our relationship with Pad for Paws.  The Board determined that the plans to work with Pad for Paws on a joint shelter project had become untenable.  It was unmistakably clear to us that if our region was to have a new animal shelter that it would be run according to the standards we have set and maintained for the past 40 years, we would need to proceed on our own.

Over the past eight months, our Board has invested hundreds of hours putting together, and now implementing and presenting a plan to our stakeholders, community leaders and volunteers.

To achieve our vision, we have contracted with Rodin Consulting, Inc., an outstanding fund raising firm from Spokane, Washington.  In addition, we are negotiating with a leading shelter design firm.  Together, these professionals will lead an energized board and a wonderful slate of volunteer supporters in the design of our new Lewis and Clark Humane Society and the campaign to fulfill our fund raising goals.

We wish to thank our thousands of donors and volunteers, as well as our past board members, for your loyalty and unwavering support.  We look forward to sharing more with you in the days and weeks ahead as we pursue this vision and build this much-needed new facility in and for our community.

Sincerely,
Lewis and Clark Humane Society Board of Directors

American Shelter Dog

In most shelters, cats are rarely identified by breed. Instead, they are labeled as Domestic short, medium or long hairs. So why aren't we describing our dogs in a similar way?
