Spay Montana

The Lewis & Clark Humane Society has merged with SPAY Montana to bring low-cost, no-cost spay and neuter surgeries to those in need in communities, small shelters and rescue groups across the state of Montana.

In keeping with our mission and goals to move forward from an “intervention facility to a prevention” facility, it is a perfect match for the two organizations to merge, allowing both organizations to grow and thus assist more shelters and communities with the pet-overpopulation explosion in our state. Thousands of puppies and kittens are euthanized each year because there are simply not enough homes for them. Shelters around the state are forced to euthanize adoptable animals for lack of space as well as the high cost of surgeries, which reduces the chance of adoption.

Each day there are 70,000 puppies and kittens born in the United States.

Currently the Lewis & Clark Humane Society SPAY Montana program has 32 community based spay and neuter clinics scheduled throughout the state of Montana this year and to date has performed over 4000 surgeries.

We are also announcing our new “Shelter to Shelter” program. This program will assist small and under-funded shelters to spay and neuter every animal they adopt. Several small shelters are adopting animals into their communities without spay or neuter surgery. Executive Director Gina Wiest says “this is a very unique opportunity for us to serve the entire state of Montana through a shelter to shelter program, as well as providing education and community outreach programs for the communities”.

American Shelter Dog

In most shelters, cats are rarely identified by breed. Instead, they are labeled as Domestic short, medium or long hairs. So why aren't we describing our dogs in a similar way?
