How you can help LCHS

The Lewis & Clark Humane Society, (LCHS) has made tremendous strides in caring for the Helena
Community animal population. LCHS has many enrichment/therapy programs, which are designed to benefit the lives of the shelter animals that are entrusted to us. The success of these programs depends upon the quality of community minded volunteers. The communities’ impression of LCHS and their interest and willingness to utilize LCHS services is greatly formed by our volunteers.

Ideals candidates must possess the following qualities/abilities:

  • Self-motivated
  • Team player
  • Must have the ability to meet assignments promptly, reliably and with flexibility
  • Able to commit to a minimum of two hours a week
  • Dependable
  • Must exhibit a willingness to learn about animals and how to interact with them
  • Agree to support LCHS’s philosophy and to perform in a professional manner

Volunteers will be trained in the basic shelter operations and are expected to work 25 hours before being moved into other positions of responsibility, such as Dog Walking, Puppy Play, Kong-icle and Turkey Pops

Volunteers must be 14 years of age to be on shelter grounds without parent, guardian or older sibling, who also have completed the application process.

Basic Shelter Operations are:

Laundry – Both buildings

Food Prep – Setting up food dishes am and pm

Kennel Cleaning – AM duty and daily

Yard Maintenance

Clean up – Garage area and sheds

Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Mandatory Quarterly Volunteer meetings are conducted on the last Sunday where staff is included. These meetings allow the potential volunteer to interact with staff and other volunteers and have a voice in the LCHS environment. If a volunteer misses two of these meetings, they will be considered no longer interested in the LCHS shelter.
